Preview Campaign Impressions, Detect Problems, Check Free Inventory

I currently serve direct contract campains and ad networks to fill the remaining inventory, together with house campaigns.

While howse capmaigns are only shown when there are no ads to show, I have a big priority with the direct contract campains, since I have contracts which I have to respect so I have to run a certain amount of ads in my inventory within a certain period of time.

What Openx lacks is the possibility to see if a campaign will be able to fulfill all the impressions until the deadline, ans with the allocated zones (site is divided in several zones), where are the critical campains, and what campaigns can I still run (what is my free space to run campaigns at each time, considering the impressions I have and the campaigns already allocated to my inventory), all based on the past impressions of each zone.

This would be a great improvement for openx to all those running direct contracts who have to respect contracts.

Best regards,
Nuno

Change Ad Server Location Based On User Input (zipcode, City, State)

Hi Everybody,

I have placed ad server on my website. The website let you customize the page as per your preferences. There are several widgets which you can add such as Events, News, Groups, Weather, etc. The page information gets displayed based on the Locale (City, State or Zip code) you input at the top of the page. Everything gets changed except the ads from Ad Server. Even though I change to different city, the ad is static & doesn't gets changed.

As per my research, I found that the current location is computed based on IP address by the ad server. Is there any way to pass the parameter to ad server for location?
Something like:
http://<adserverurl>?city=los+angeles@state=ca or
http://<adserverurl>?zipcode=95080

I am new to openx. If you direct me to proper docs or links, that would be great.

Thanks in Advance
Sanjay

Development Of Openx

Hi,

We are a dutch agency, serving around 25 mio ads / day. We have been using ox for 1,5 years now, and got quite experienced. I wanted to share some of my positive aspects, and some questions. Hopefully to learn and discuss.

We use OX two sided: a) as an agency, running advertising campaigns on a number of networks, and as publisher for a number of third parties.

The very positive:
OX has been running very stable. We have never had any error, no strange memory leaks or so. We have a very experienced hoster who has distributed the server to a number of front end nodes, mysql machines, and moved the images/swfs/movies to a CDN. Works like a charm.

Second to this is costwise. Compared even to the rock bottom pricing of some commercial packages, we run at 1/5 th of the other systems.

We also had to integrate with some exotic video tools, and could quite easily, not vendor dependent, add extra invocation types, like xml codes. We have done this for silverlight, philips Net TV, and some other players. Absolute commercial freedom, all be it with some sweat.

The ad-types we are able to deliver are often commercially sold as extras. OX has all kinds of Layers, Interstitials, etc included. Standard!

Speed! Our platform is way, way faster then the commercial networks we see here. depends on the install, but its perfect.

The positive

The user rights structure is also perfect. Compared to other systems. We are able to hand our user acces to users, and subusers.

Then there's the thing that we are able to modify parts of the software. We developed some integration with banner 'generation' tools, that needed extra file types. Could do. Perfect, with using the API to create new banners & zones.

Sequencing. OX. has beautifull possibilites for daisychaing, sequencing etc, but it could be soo much easier to use. A trafficker has to learn quite a bit coding before being able to do so.

Could be better

Not really a fault by OX, but some other admanagement systems (notably dart!), consider ox inferior. it seems. So sending out ox codes to dart, gives quite a headache sometimes. Strange thing is: not allways, but sometimes. And offcourse dart won't clarify any reasons for this.

The absense of 'reach' or unique audience as standard is ridiculous. We have developed a plugin for this which needs to set extra cookies, then counts these. And we get data from another screen or by querying mysql.

Data analysis. We have developed raw data logging so we can analyze data with the use of tableau. If anyone is interested in commercializing this, please contact us.

Bluntly missing!

Retargeting. Sending out a cookie with a 1x1 pixel, then retarget banners to this user should be failry simple. Basically its the reverse of setting out a conversion pixel, and should be at the core of the system allready.

An open market for plugins. We have developed some 5 pieces of code, which we should love to discuss / improve. And I'm willing to pay for extra feautures like out of the box reach , BT or Retargeting, but i now feel a lot of people are actually all building this themselves.

Here's my thoughts. Please contact me for more ideas.

Hello From Granada

I’ve only just signed up, and have watched the 2 x 5min tutorials and the 60min tutorial. Which as a publisher (learning) have made my hairs stand on end. I'm filled with a zillion questions, but have been looking at the digital world long enough to know that if I just watch here, before asking, and play with the system a bit. I can probably answer 70% for myself by investigation.
Basically I come from a 35mm film background, supplying equipment, crew, models and locations to the film industry. 5 years ago I started experimenting and making a move in to the digital world, in both Spanish and English. Being a part of various teams making web specific film and video content.
At last I can see a way forward as a publisher, (Not being beholden to one supplier of ads) being able to consider all external suppliers as remnant accounts) that have to do better than any ad I or OpenX can sell locally at any time of day.
I can't wait to get to the point where I pass the level of freebie and have to pass monies to OpenX, because if I get to that level I will be making more out of my quality targeted advertising space.
So I would appreciate some help down the line. I’m willing to give free advise to anybody embarking on the multifaceted road of live action filming and production. I’ve worked all over Europe and North Africa but live and specialize in Spain. With a multitude of original film Video Locations Spain
At the moment I'm testing and learning OpenX on my site iTele.es of which V2 will roll out in a couple of months, and be fully multilingual. It will also have new, user interaction capabilities for my nish Spanish social and video sharing network.

With Facebook connect you can use the users demgraphics to get more targeted ads. You may use this information locally within your systems to help better target advertisements, but you may not transfer this information to any 3rd party ad networks whatsoever."

Anyone know any tips and tricks how to develop this? I understand that if I install OpenX on my own hosting account, it will run faster. But even though I have 3 different hosting accounts, I'm having trouble installing the downloadable version for various reasons (mostly upgrading PHP on my hosts).

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has used hostcolor.com? They have an OpenX account for around $100 a year.

On this note, I wish OpenX had an option between their free and enterprise accounts. I have a very small project that will require only a tiny amount of traffic. The free is too slow and the enterprise is too expensive.

Cindy

Which Ad Networks have you used to generate revenue with, and which did you make the most money with?

I previously only knew about AdSense, AdBrite, Kontera, YPN, and Chitika... That was my whole universe until I made my first AdSense banner here and saw the drop down menu for the "Enable Click Tracking for" box on the "Add a Banner" screen.

In that box it mentions: AdTech, Atlas, Bluestreak, CPX, Doubleclick, Eyeblaster, Falk, AdSense, Kontera, OpenX, MediaPlex, Tango Zebra, Trade Doubler, and YPN.

-I'm guessing since it doesn't mention Chitika nor AdBrite, that it only includes the other Ad Networks that need special banner tracking codes... So there could be dozens or hundreds of others!

So which have You Used, and What's your Experience with them?

I'll start us off... And I should mention that I've got many dozens of niche sites all on different topics that I'm serving ads across. Some get 10 Impressions a day, others, 100,000.

I've personally had lots of experience with AdSense, AdBrite, and Kontera.

AdSense has always been my benchmark, for 5 years now, and it's tough to beat without working at it. Their ads are just the most relevant, period. At one point I was making $1,200 daily on one site from AdSense alone... Ahh, the glory days.

Kontera does a great job making easy cash if you use their in-context links, but their banners stunk up my sites.

AdBrite is awesome IF you put in the time to weed out the low-quality ads. I try to serve more of these filtered ads than I do adsense, but it's tricky, even with OpenX, because their advertisers come and go so often and you'll be approving and rejecting ads on each site daily.

Chitika has a big minimum # of daily visitors required, and since I have tons of smaller sites, I couldn't get in.

YPN, which may or may not be deceased now that MSN bought them out, was exactly like AdSense in every way except for Horribly irrelevant ads... I made $0 with them in the same time I made $400 with AdSense because of their irrelevance!

So who's next? Together we can improve everyone's bottom line just by sharing here.

Uniqlicks Defector Has Many Suggestions!

Dear OpenX,

I paid $90 for a subscription to Uniqlicks a few months back, but I'm here with you today.

Why did I choose you? A little thing called reliability. I can put OpenX on my own server and sleep MUCH better at night, knowing that someone else's mistakes won't take away my ability to generate income.

This is very important to me, especially since only 1 month after joining Uniqlicks, they went down for 10 hours with no ads being shown. Yeah, 10 hours. Apparently I was the first one to bring it to their attention, too, after 9 1/2 hours. Hmm...

They also have an ethics problem over there at Uniqlicks that is guaranteed to be their downfall. Apparently they have no problem breaking the CAN SPAM laws and impersonating google to to scare up new customers!

Despite their evil acts, I willingly chose to pay $90 for their service instead of trying OpenX because of their absolutely gorgeous, drop-dead simple interface. It was so very, very simple to get ads going... In fact there were NO docs because it was 100% completely intuitive!

In a matter of minutes I had about 50 different zones across 10 websites all earning $ and tracking very well with both adsense and adbrite. It was all point & click, then copy & paste. They even used tags on all the zones and ads so you could easily run a customized report on the ads using a desired tag!

Another great thing they did was automagically monitor my clickthru rate and display more ads of the ad that is getting more clicks! -So if AdSense was doing better on a site, that site will automatically show 75% adsense ads, and only 25% adbrite ads... Without me even thinking about it.

Yet another drop-dead simple thing to do there is something they call "Sure Sheild," which monitors for click fraud and automatically stops the same IP from getting the same Ad more than a couple of times... All without ever so much as me clicking a checkbox.

Best of all, there simply wasn't anything to be confused about. No campaigns, no floors, no multi-tabbed menus, heck, there was only one small menu on the whole site, in fact. You could memorize every setting on the site in a minute, easily.

Yes, I know very well that OpenX offers many functions and more flexibility than UniQlicks ever could dream about, but I see no reasons why the OpenX platform can't evolve to include intuitive controls. As it is, I spent many hours learning how to create a simple ad or two here, and I still have what seems like eternity to spend learning how to optimized everything.

Even a "beginners mode" where common tasks are simplified to be more like theirs would be a huge improvement, allowing hordes of new users to jump into OpenX when they were stopped by, or were afraid of the learning curve before.

(And keep in mind, there are two learning curves here; the actual tech curve, and the Ads biz too, that are both your job to teach. -If you like having lots of users, that is.)

Anyway, I just wanted to pass a few ideas along from a defector. I love open source communities (I've contributed to Wordpress, Joomla, OSCommerce, Firefox, and others over the years) and I can see OpenX becoming their equal easily with a little more attention to the User Interface.

Cheers,
James

Automizing Sales?

Is there some sort of OS programme which enables me to fully automize the sales of views for existing clients? Basically, what I am looking for is some sort of programme which allows me to set the rates (preferably per client), and when they are running out of views, they get a mail, leading them to some page, where they can "order" more views (or clicks, or...), immediately followed by an online payment system (paypal)?

I've seen a few which are for sale, but which are WAY out of my budget (yes, the cheapest was $80, but I am just doing this as a hobby, hoping the sales will pay my cost...).
