Hi,

I have read through all the documentation provided and can not figure out how to fix my problem. I am getting that ck.php error.

I have the latest version of openx. I haven't had any problems until I went to this version.

My banner is on:

www.bestinvestingnews.com

The error i get is

You don't have permission to access /openx/www/delivery/ck.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Host provider is Host Gator

I don't know what to do.

I will pay for help. Please point me in the right direction.

thanks,

Derek

Pretty sure it is just HostGator screwing with us as I am going through the same thing.

I have a ticket in to them. Their service has really been going down hill since their recent "upgrades".

Update: Indeed, the issue was with Host Gator. They did not offer any information as to what the issue was, but they informed me that the issue had been resolved and, at least on my site, it has been.

Could you tell me what you have told them, so I can get my site fixed also.

Ideally the ticket number.

Nothing much. Just kept it simple...

QUOTE
Does anyone have any idea why my OpenX (a.k.a. OpenAds. a.k.a. phpadsnew.) server suddenly stopped working yesterday after nearly a year of working just fine?

I now get a 403 error whenever a banner is clicked.

"Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /adserver/www/delivery/ck.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.2.10 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.10 OpenSSL/0.9.8i DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635..."

I have contacted OpenX and they are saying that I need to speak with my host.

The last line came from another post I read hear about a similar 403 error in which the OpenX tech was suggesting that the problem was with Apache on the host server.

Billy H. with HostGator.com had it fixed in about 15 minutes.

(3:45:13 AM) kevin: that you give your paid users?
(3:45:43 AM) Norris Co: not this, phpadsnew must have had different system requirements
(3:47:04 AM) kevin: but right here is proof that you supported it not even a month ago.. http://forum.openx.org/index.php?showtopic=503423835
(3:47:15 AM) kevin: its the same software.. different name
(3:48:27 AM) Norris Co: if we supported it, it was because tech didnt stop to check to see if it was allowed by the TOS, I apologize for any inconveninece but I cannot support this software, if you believe that the software should be supported you can email support@hostgator.com and ask admins
(3:49:44 AM) kevin: but the tos you refereced does not talk about this it talkes about pro. banner exchanges wich this is not
(3:51:44 AM) Norris Co: I apologize for any inconvenience but i have checked with admin on duty and admin advised open x is not supported, since this is not supported i am not able to assist you with this, if you believe that the software should be supported you can email support@hostgator.com and ask admins

Hi Derek,

It is clearly stated here that:

So, the best way is to change the Hosting company smile.gif
Other than this I do not reccomend using Fantastico OpenX version as they are using a predefined OpenX files and database dump which does not cooperate with OpenX central server.

As a workaround I would suggest trying the following: Perform OpenX installation process on your own server where you can easily install it without any problems. Grab the installed OpenX files and newly created database and upload it to the hosted account. Additionally change your OpenX config file settings in the 'var' directory after successful upload.

Once you are succeed the only problem is that you may be blocked by the hosting company administrators.

This should work but I do not confirm it for 100%

I have recently run into the same problem. Here is my conversation with HostGator. Basically the admins need to "Mod_sec, whitelisting of the rule to allow remote linking through PHP gets, yes."

QUOTE
Chat Start Date: Dec 16 2008 9:17:59 PM
(9:19:07 PM) Rubin Ri: has entered the chat.

My Original Question: As I understand your TOS read ... "banner-ad services (similar to rapidshare, photobucket, or commercial banner ad rotation)" are prohibited from reseller accounts. Does this really include if the banner rotation is strictly for the website(s) that are hosted on the HostGator servers? For example, if I wanted to rotate my weekly ads in various sections of my own website hosted with hostgator?

(9:19:25 PM) Rubin Ri: Nope, that's a bit of an ambiguous and blanket term.
(9:19:30 PM) Rubin Ri: It's alright if you're just displaying ads, sure.
(9:19:47 PM) Rubin Ri: But there are some sites that strictly use the hosting ONLY for banner ad services, which is not allowed.
(9:20:15 PM) Devon: Ok, it seems then that there is some additional configuration needed to work on a hostgator account as all of the sudden when an ad is clicked i get the following error
(9:20:23 PM) Devon: You don't have permission to access /ads/www/delivery/ck.php on this server.
(9:20:54 PM) Devon: which has been described in the openx forums as being directly related to a recent change to your servers (or something to that effect).
(9:21:01 PM) Rubin Ri: Can I get the exact URL of the problem please.
(9:21:13 PM) Devon: http://XXXXXXXXXXX.com/index.php
(9:21:17 PM) Rubin Ri: Mod_sec, whitelisting of the rule to allow remote linking through PHP gets, yes.
(9:21:26 PM) Rubin Ri: An exact URL to the Forbidden page would be optimal.
(9:21:33 PM) Devon: k
(9:21:38 PM) Devon: http://XXXXXXXXXXXXX.com/ads/www/delivery/...XXXXXXXXXX.com/
(9:21:44 PM) Rubin Ri: One moment.
(9:21:48 PM) Devon: Thank you
(9:25:21 PM) Rubin Ri: Check it out now.
(9:25:37 PM) Rubin Ri: +1 Ad click-thru for you. smile.gif
(9:25:47 PM) Devon: Oh great, looks perfect!
(9:25:50 PM) Devon: thanks so much!
(9:25:51 PM) Rubin Ri: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
(9:25:57 PM) Rubin Ri: No problem Devon.
(9:26:10 PM) Devon: Now incase another client has the same question, is there anything we can do so as to not bug your support department every time
(9:26:11 PM) Devon: ?
(9:26:22 PM) Rubin Ri: You'll have to bug us. tongue.gif
(9:26:28 PM) Rubin Ri: Our admins gotta whitelist that rule.
(9:26:32 PM) Rubin Ri: So there's no way around it, sorry.
(9:26:33 PM) Devon: alright, if you say so smile.gif
(9:26:36 PM) Rubin Ri: SHould be working from now on though.
(9:26:37 PM) Devon: not a problem
(9:26:43 PM) Devon: thank you for all your help
(9:26:48 PM) Devon: have a wonderful evening
(9:26:54 PM) Rubin Ri: You too!
(9:26:57 PM) Rubin Ri: 'Night Devon.
(9:26:57 PM) Devon: adios
(9:26:58 PM) Rubin Ri: Thank you for using HostGator Live Chat. If you could take a minute to rate your experience with HostGator as well as my overall performance, that would help us to improve our customer service. To do that, just click the button that says Rate and Exit in the upper right hand corner. The survey takes less than a minute to fill out.
(9:27:01 PM) Devon: Closed this chat intentionally

So as you can see, the hostgator representative (as usual) was more than helpful and the problem was resolved minutes after it was reported to our company. As long as you are not using openx for a commercial-grade ad rotation service you should be in the clear on hostgator.

Hope this helps,

For anyone else reading this not sure what the resolution was: the issue was that apache was blocking the click-through because of mod_security restrictions, most likely

Hopefully most hosting companies would be able to assist you like they did!

+1.

I was getting the same error when clicking on OpenX ads, namely:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /openx/www/delivery/ck.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

My OpenX ad server instance is also hosted on HostGator. My HG support tech also identified the problem as HostGator's recent upgrade of my server's apache to 2.2, which included new mod_security behaviour. He put the domain name hosting my OpenX ad server onto their mod_security whitelist, and now the error 403 appears to be gone.

I'm a bit disturbed to see a HostGator tech say that they consider hosting an OpenX ad server a violation of their Terms of Service, though. I'm operating with the belief that the tech's interpretation was wrong.

Hi,

I believe the quote above said the tech did not see OpenX use itself as a violation. What they want is to prevent users from simply delivering banners to widespread sites, rather than to their own controlled sites. Basically, you should be fine within normal limits - only if you are trying to create an adnetwork would there be an issue (of course its best to talk to them about such matters)

The ck.php issue with mod_security should only be for <noscript> sections of javascript tags and also for IMG invocation tags. Other tags should be fine, although impression logging, for instance with Local Mode type tags, might be affected. This is all depending on the exact settings of mod_security
